In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the High Street was populated with great visual diversity not least from the likes of Biba which had a flagship store in London until its closure in 1975. While the retail outlet founded by Barbara Hulanicki may have long gone her legacy fashion statement clothes for women have not. The Biba look of ‘ elegance with attitude’ continues today , and you can buy into a piece of it at House of Fraser.
Biba took a ‘retro’ move away from the earlier sixties styles, and took inspiration from Art Nouveau in particular; the iconic Biba logo in gold with its celtic interlacing swirls hinted at what the customer should expect ,with echos of earlier designers of the likes of Aubrey Beardsley and Alphonse Mucha.

atomretro.com ( and no, sadly,I do not own this site) carries one of the most comprehensive ranges of baracuta clothing and accessories, and it also provides one of the best and most fulsome histories of the harrington jacket. So without the need to re-invent the wheel here is a taster, and then an easy link here takes you to an index page on the site and, if you click here you can read a full page report: Atom Retro Guide To Buying Harrington Jackets>>
The report is full of great facts and history around this classic heritage brand:
‘The origins of Baracuta and the original G9 harrington jacket can be traced back to 1930′s Manchester. John and Isaac Miller (The Miller Brothers) set out with a plan to improve their range of raincoats (specifically intended as workwear). Manchester is notorious for its excessive rainfall (largely due to its location at the foot of the Pennines), so a lightweight rainproof working jacket was high on the brothers’ agenda for manufacture. With the design…to read more>> ’

Unmistakenly nautical in bearing , double-breasted and with broad lapels, this is a striking outer coat. The pea coat became the ‘uniform’ of sailors in American and some European navies, and its style has been passed into the civilian population, where it has become a classic style.
Probably nearer black than dark navy, this pea coat/ reefer coat is lined, the outer garment is heavy wool, and it has two slash side pockets, and naval anchor buttons.
For a close look over this garment you can go to >USA Navy Wool Pea Coat

As they say, to get ahead you must first get a hat. Here is a really versatile hat with the cool last century look but with all the strength and durability to stay looking really good in a busy travelling world.
Established in 1857, Borsalino has ridden the ups and downs of fashion and commerce. Strong in early 1900s, the business declined in the 1940s, only to re-emerge strongly when a new factory was built in 1986. Borsalino now produces a wide range of fine clothing and accessories, including hats, ties and watches.
The Borsalino Casual Crusher is imported from Italy, and is a 100% fur felt hat that can be rolled for easy packing. This is the most comfortable hat that you will ever wear. Hat has a pinch-front crown with stitching on the 2 3/8″ brim. Available in Black, Brown, Tawny and Taupe (a slightly olive shade).
